The Initial Unit offering (IUO) is the climate change industry’s equivalent of the Initial Public Offering (IPO). A company seeking to raise money can launch an IUO as a way to raise funds. Investors can buy into the IUO and receive new Kyotounits issued by the company. The IUO was developed as a way to help support start-up businesses and communities gain access to the carbon market and to produce Carbon Credits. The system supports the Gold Standard (an internationally recognized organization with expertise in climate and development projects) certification of carbon emissions reductions and sustainable development benefits.
